MUELLER MOSAIC:
NOTHING
The Mueller Mosaic Company of Trenton, NJ was founded by German immigrant Herman Carl Mueller. At the time, Trenton was one of the largest
pottery centers in America, and Mueller was dean of the industry. Like Madam Curie, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers, Jonas Salk, and Nikola Tesla, in 1898 Mueller was
awarded the John Scott Medal for his production methods. However the Mueller Mosaic company was never a large concern and all its production bore his artistic mark. There are few
large Mueller installations like the one found at Columbia High School. Some portions were standard catalog items, like the medallions of the doors and the zodiac images in the lobby, but others
like the wedges above the doors were completely custom. In addition to the lobby, a Mueller Mosaic oak leaf border encircles the halls on all three floors of the school.
